The La Plata Blue Knights is a nonprofit, community-based ALL-VOLUNTEER youth sports organization providing organized football and cheerleading programs for children ranging in ages of 5 to 14. We work with our carefully selected volunteer coaches to promote a positive atmosphere to ensure responsibility, honesty and good sportsmanship.
The Blue Knights Organization was started in the early 1980's by Bill Bartelt. It was started as a youth organization specifically for boys and girls in the LaPlata area. We have a lot of parents who were Blue Knights when they were young and now their children play and cheer for us as well. Mr. Bartelt and his wife were gracious enough to join us at homecoming this year. What a treat! Needless to say, he was overwhelmed and pleasantly surprised by the number of football and cheerleaders that are now part of the LPBK family. Thank you, Mr. Bartelt!
We do have one very famous former Blue Knight, Larry Johnson. He is a pro bowl running back for the Kansas City Chiefs. He was drafted by the Chiefs 27th overall in the 2003 NFL Draft. He played college football at Penn State. Larry was born in LaPlata. He still keeps in contact with the Blue Knights and in fact has recently donated a signed pro bowl shirt which was raffled off by the Knights.
